Foundation 1: High-Quality Instruction
Title: K-2 Word Study Roll-Out (Required for ALL K-2 ELA teachers!)
Tuesday, Session 1 only! 9:10-10:10
Presenters: Shannon Nagaj, Heather Urbanowicz, Sandra Bruner, Linda Dallman, & Mike Thomas
Description: Teachers will receive their Word Study materials during this session. Presenters will lead teachers through a discussion of implementing the program, a Q&A session, and grade-level breakouts.
Location: Room 202
Resources: Word Study binders and materials will be distributed.
Title: Informational Reading: The Two- (or Three- or Four-) Pass Model
Tuesday, Session 2 only! 10:20-11:20
Presenter: Beth Grillo, ELA Curriculum Coordinator
Description: Rarely do we completely understand something that we read the first time - especially if it's a complex text containing new information. This workshop will help participants structure a guided reading lesson that uses the two- (or three- or four-) pass system. Beth will offer suggestions for leading students through new texts by covering annotation, questioning, reflection, and post-reading activities.

Description: Tom will provide teachers with an overview of Charlotte Danielson's Framework for Teaching, the new teacher evaluation system that Ferndale administrators will begin using this year.

Title: The Person of the Teacher
Presenters: Katie Jeffrey, UHS School Leader, and David Gardner, UHS ELA Teacher
Description: Teachers will engage in introspective activities and conversations aimed at exploring their personal and academic histories and how these have shaped who they are as teachers and their "way of being" in the classroom. Teachers will then compare this with their students' experiences and discuss strategies for creating inclusive classrooms that reach all students.
