Foundation 1: High-Quality Instruction
Title: It’s All about Quality Learning & Instruction
Presenter: Marty Chaffee, Oakland Schools School Quality Consultant
Description: It’s all about quality learning and instruction. Strengthening teacher instruction is essential in order to meet the rigor of preparing students for career and college readiness. In this workshop, participants will gain tools and processes which will support and strengthen their work in classrooms.

Title: Mini-Lessons - Tips, Teaching Points, and The Teach, Oh My!
Presenter: Mike Thomas, Kindergarten teacher at JFK
Description: In this breakout session participants will learn when approaching a minilesson to review three critical areas to help guide their instruction: the tips, the teaching point and the teach. Also, participants will learn ways to take the minilesson into student conferences and small group work for more effective instruction.

Title: Socratic Seminars Across the Content Areas

Description: In this session, participants will learn how to implement Socratic Seminars in various content areas. Participants will receive background on the Socratic technique, tips on how to successfully hold a seminar, assessment ideas, and hard and electronic copies of planning handouts. Beth will hold a mini-Socratic Seminar in the second half of the session.

Description: Mary Perfitt-Nelson will help teachers consider the wide range of activities in the classroom and the level of sound and movement needed for maximum learning to occur. Teachers will create a scale for noise level and movement that they can then teach their students. This helpful technique will help create a culture of learning.

Description: In this breakout session, participants will learn about the different parts of our brain, how it relates to challenging behavior (from tattling to anger/aggression), and strategies to use in the classroom. This is geared mostly toward a PreK-6 audience but others may benefit as well.

Description: Rarely do we completely understand something that we read the first time - especially if it's a complex text containing new information. This workshop will help participants structure a guided reading lesson that uses the two- (or three- or four-) pass system. Beth will offer suggestions for leading students through new texts by covering annotation, questioning, reflection, and post-reading activities.
